For our series of interviews, we had the honor to interview ElephantDrive CEO Michael Fisher. Prior to becoming CEO of this online backup company, Michael worked at companies like Vivendi Universal Net and Traffic Marketplace.

In our interview, Michael explains why you should pick ElephantDrive as your backup solution because of the multi-platform support, and because of their neat puns (always a nice, added feature!). He goes on to give us an exclusive scoop, namely that in a couple of weeks ElephantDrive will be introducing a backup and collaborative sharing solution for their products.

Why did you guys start an online backup company?

We actually had this problem – we wanted offsite protection and easy access for files. We also wanted a solution that would work nicely with the network storage solution we already had in the office. After looking around at the options, nothing seemed to fit the bill and still be affordable – ElephantDrive was born the next day.

What differentiates your company from other backup services?

A few key features make us different from other backup providers:

  • Because most people have more than one device worth protecting, our accounts allow multiple devices. The other guys sell licenses for each computer.
  • Because a backup is only as good as your ability to restore, our service focuses on access first.
  • We not only offer backup, but also deliver sync, sharing, and collaboration.
  • Better puns (ElephantDrive is very big, never forgets, and works for peanuts).

Could you tell us a bit more about the culture in your company?

The team is serious about technology and security, but laid back about everything else. Being located in Santa Monica, just steps from the Pacific Ocean, it’s fair to say we’ve embraced the Silicon Beach lifestyle.

How has the growth of your company been over the last few months?

The last few months have been explosive for us, as our most recent distribution partnerships have kicked into high gear. We work with hardware leaders like NETGEAR, QNAP, and Thecus and are rapidly expanding into the remote technical support space.

Why should a (small) business owner pick you as his/her online backup solution?

Business owners should feel confident that files stored with ElephantDrive are secure from any threat. Our clients’ files are encrypted with the Advanced Encryption Standard, known as AES, using a 256-bit key. The key is derived from the file itself. The United States National Security Agency (NSA) has approved this algorithm and key combination for information classified as “Top Secret”. With ElephantDrive, your data is secure from fire, theft, natural disaster, and device failure.

What’s the most important reason why customers should use your products and not a competing service?

The fact that you can use multiple devices and not get charged extra is a major factor for why our customers choose ElephantDrive. Nowadays more and more people have multiple devices that they need to back up to the cloud.

What’s the most amazing data number that you can share with our readers?

In the last year, we’ve grown the number of accounts we service by 500%.

What does the future hold for your company? Could you give us a hint on what the next big new feature for your service will be?

If you are looking for backup and collaborative sharing in one solution, you won’t have to wait more than a few weeks.

What tips would you like to give readers to move into the cloud, apart from backing up?

Security is only as strong as the weakest link in the chain. Don’t write your password on a post-it note stuck to your monitor!

Try before you buy! We’re confident that if you try our service out and compare it to the field, you’ll end up an ElephantDrive subscriber. If not, we appreciate that you gave us a shot.

Anything else that you would like to share with our readers?

In the next couple of weeks we plan to implement a new version of our software that will enable your readers to collaboratively share, backup, and sync with ease. You can also check out our beta android app on our site.

We’d like to say thank you to Michael for taking the time to do this interview with us. We’re looking forward to seeing that new ElephantDrive in a couple of features!
