Mozy has announced that their new feature, known as Mozy Stash, is open to the public as a beta test. It is available to all MozyHome and MozyPro subscribers with a bundled storage plan. Stash is a file synchronization feature that promises to be a simple way to sync files between all devices associated with your Mozy account, including, but not limited to, your PC, iPhone, iPad.
How Stash Works With Mozy’s Existing Backup Solutions
Stash is designed to complement their existing backup service by specifying a folder on your computer whose contents will be uploaded to their cloud storage system. Stash will then monitor the contents of that folder and update the copy stored on the Mozy servers each time it changes. Those changes are then synchronized across every device associated with your Stash, so that no matter what device you’re on, you’ll always have an up-to-date copy of your file.
How Stash is Different
Unlike Mozy’s existing online backup system, which only ensures that files are stored securely in the cloud and available to any computer associated with your account, Stash goes a step further and makes sure your files are up-to-date as well. Any time you make a change to a file stored in a Stash folder, the system will automatically update that file on the serversand propagate the change to the Stash folders on your other devices.
Getting Started With Stash
The first thing you will need is an account with their service. If you don’t already have a MozyHome or MozyPro account, you can sign up for one on their website. However, if you’re not interested in committing just yet, they also offer free 2 GB home accounts, with the incentive of an additional 256 MB of storage for each friend you refer to the service. After creating your account, you then have to download the MozyHome software, which will allow you to select a folder to upload to their servers and automatically schedule backups. You must then join the Stash Beta program and download the PC application to get started. After installing it, you must specify another folder on your local PC to be used as the Stash. If you don’t want to use another folder, you can use the same folder you did in the first step. All the files inside that folder will be monitored for changes, and will automatically be updated.
What Is Mozy?
Mozy is a secure online backup service that offers cloud storage solutions for both home consumers and businesses. Their consumer service, MozyHome, offers 50 GB of storage space for $5.99 a month. It boasts a large number of features, including military-grade encryption, file synchronization through their Stash service, the ability to access files via an Android or iPhone app, and multiple data restoration methods, including the option to request a DVD of your backed up files. Backups are lightning-fast thanks to their incremental backup system, which records changes made to files after the initial backup, saving space and time. Mozy’s PC software allows you to schedule backups to run automatically while you’re working, to ensure that your files are always up-to-date on their servers.
